Ingredients

4 large whole wheat pita breads

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

2 teaspoons garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a spicy kick)

1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for a cheesy richness)

Instructions

Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C), ensuring it reaches the right temperature before you bake the croutons.

Take each pita bread and cut them into quarters, resulting in triangular pieces. For an extra crunchy texture, consider cutting the triangles into smaller bite-sized pieces.

In a large mixing bowl, pour in the extra virgin olive oil. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, thyme, sea salt, black pepper, and optional red pepper flakes. Whisk the ingredients together until well combined, forming a flavorful oil mixture.

Carefully add the pita pieces into the bowl with the oil mixture. Use your hands or a spatula to gently toss the pita pieces, ensuring each piece is evenly coated with the savory oil.

Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup. Spread the seasoned pita pieces in a single layer on the baking sheet, making sure they are not overlapping to allow for even cooking.

If desired, sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the top of the pita pieces, adding a cheesy twist to your croutons.

Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the pita pieces for 15-20 minutes. Remember to stir or flip the pieces halfway through cooking to promote even browning. They should turn golden brown and crispy when done.

Once baked, remove the croutons from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes. This step is essential as they will continue to become crispier as they cool.

For storage, place your crunchy pita bread croutons in an airtight container if you're not using them immediately. They can stay fresh for up to a week, perfect for adding crunch to salads or soups!
