1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably whole wheat or gluten-free)

1/4 cup BBQ sauce, plus extra for serving

1/4 cup finely chopped onion

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)

Salt and black pepper, to taste

4 slider buns

Fresh lettuce leaves or arugula, for garnish

Sliced tomatoes, for garnish

Avocado slices, for garnish

Instructions
 

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.

    Mash the Chickpeas: In a large mixing bowl, add the drained and rinsed chickpeas. Using a fork or potato masher, mash the chickpeas until they are mostly smooth, ensuring to leave some chunks for added texture.

      Combine Ingredients: Add in the breadcrumbs, BBQ sauce, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, soy sauce, smoked paprika, ground cumin, cayenne pepper (if using), and a sprinkle of salt and black pepper. Stir the mixture well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.

        Form Patties: Using your hands, divide the mixture into four equal portions. Shape each portion into a round patty that is roughly the same size as your slider buns. Place each patty onto the prepared baking sheet.

          Bake the Patties: Transfer the baking sheet to the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes. Be sure to flip each patty halfway through the baking time to ensure they become golden brown and crispy on both sides.

            Prepare the Buns: While the patties are baking, you can lightly toast the slider buns. Place them in a pan or on a baking sheet in the oven for a few minutes, just until they're golden and slightly crisp.

              Assemble the Sliders: Once the patties are baked and crispy, place each one on a slider bun. Top with a generous drizzle of BBQ sauce, a layer of fresh lettuce or arugula, slices of ripe tomato, and creamy avocado.
