Ingredients

  • 2.0 large onions
  • 1.0 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1.0 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1.0 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1.0 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1.0 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon paprika
  • 1.0 large egg
  • 1.0 cup buttermilk
  • 2.0 cups breadcrumbs
  • None spray olive oil

Instructions

  • Prepare the Onions: Peel the onions and slice them into 0.25-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.
  • Create the Batter Station: In three different bowls, prepare the flour mixture, buttermilk mixture, and breadcrumbs: In the first bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Mix well. In the second bowl, whisk the egg and then add the buttermilk. Mix until combined. In the third bowl, place the breadcrumbs.
  • Coat the Onion Rings: Take each onion ring and first dip it into the flour mixture, shaking off any excess. Next, immerse it in the buttermilk mixture, allowing it to coat evenly. Finally, dredge it in the breadcrumbs, pressing lightly to ensure the breadcrumbs stick. Repeat this process for all onion rings.
  • Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.
  • Arrange the Onion Rings: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with olive oil. Place the coated onion rings in a single layer in the basket, making sure they don’t touch each other for even cooking. You may need to do this in batches.
  • Air Fry: Spray the tops of the onion rings lightly with olive oil. Cook for 10 minutes, turning them halfway through, until golden and crispy. If you want them extra crispy, you can air fry them an additional 2-3 minutes.
  • Serve: Once done, remove the onion rings from the air fryer and let them cool slightly. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch or spicy ketchup.

Notes

For extra crunch, use panko breadcrumbs.
